Finding and surfacing great content on X can power real-time storytelling during your production.
In this article, we’ll walk you through best practices to:
Discover Content on X
X Advanced Search
Best for: Building precise searches across filters such as keywords, hashtags, users, mentions, and engagement
How to do it:
- Go to twitter.com/search-advanced
- Fill in any relevant fields:
-
- Keywords, phrases, and hashtags → e.g., #GoHawks, Seahawks, “Road to the Super Bowl”
- Accounts → posts that are either from, to, or @mention specific users
- Engagement → set a floor for replies, likes, and reposts
- Dates → set a specific timeframe
Pro tip: Once you get a great result set, bookmark the search URL in your browser so you can revisit it quickly when you’re live. When you find great content, we recommend featuring posts with one click using our Chrome extension, Tagboard Curate.
Use Search Operators (directly in the Search Bar)
Best for: Fast, flexible searching without leaving the main site
How to do it: You can type advanced filters directly in the X search bar. Here are some of the most useful ones for producers:
Operator |
What It Does |
Example |
from:username |
Only shows tweets by that user |
from:NFL |
@username |
Tweets that mention a user |
@espn |
#hashtag |
Filters by hashtag |
#NBAFinals |
filter:media |
Only tweets with images or video |
#GoHawks filter:media |
-filter:retweets |
Removes RTs to reduce noise |
#WNBA -filter:retweets |
"exact phrase" |
Matches a phrase exactly |
"Go Hawks!" |
Pro tip: Combine filters to narrow your search. For example: #NBAFinals filter:media -filter:retweets
Create & Monitor X Lists
Best for: Curating tweets from trusted accounts (such as teams, athletes, media, influencers)
How to do it: On any account profile, click the ••• menu, and select “Add/remove from Lists”. You can add a user to an existing List or create a new one. Lists can be public or private. You can view the list as its own custom timeline on web or mobile.
You can also monitor and feature content from public Lists on X. Several organizations across media, sports, and entertainment maintain X Lists that can be incredibly helpful, such as C-SPAN’s Lists of politicians or NFL’s Lists of teams and players. To see the public Lists that any user has created, go to the account profile, click the ••• menu, and select View Lists.
Pro tip: Use Lists to avoid re-running searches. They’re especially useful for pre-approved or recurring content sources, such as reporters, beat writers, athletes, and teams.
Use X Pro (formerly TweetDeck)
Best for: Real-time monitoring of multiple searches, Lists, and hashtags in one spot, especially during a live event
What you can do:
- Create multiple columns to track:
- Hashtag searches like #GoHawks OR @Seahawks -filter:retweets
- Lists of verified or internal accounts
- Mentions of your own brand or broadcast handle
- Apply filters within columns (e.g., filter:media)
- Drag-and-drop to rearrange your content on the fly
Note: This feature requires a Premium paid X account.
Feature X Content to Tagboard
Once you’ve found X content you want to show on screen, there are several simple and efficient methods to bring that content into Tagboard so you can put it on screen.
Curate
The Tagboard Chrome Extension is the most efficient way to get X posts on screen, enabling a one-click workflow to bring content directly from X into Tagboard. To feature an X post using the Chrome Extension:
- Download the extension and sign in to Tagboard
- Hover your mouse over a post you want to feature on X.com. Click on the Curate button in the upper right corner
- Select which social boards you want to feature the post to from the modal
- Pro tip: you can set a default social board to eliminate the second step of having to choose a social board every time you feature a post. This is especially helpful if you are producing for a show and plan to send all of your content to one place. To set a default, open the Chrome Extension dropdown. Hover your mouse over the social board you want to set as your default. Click on the gear and select ‘set as default’.
Feature Post by URL
You can also manually feature a post using its direct link. This is a great option for collaborative workflows, where the team member searching for content isn’t producing in Tagboard. It’s also a great option if you can’t use a Chrome browser.
- Copy the specific post URL from X
- Open the social board where you want to feature this post. Select the ‘Feature Post via URL’ button in the top right corner.
Paste the URL in the popup window.
Our iOS mobile app allows you to feature content on the go. Simply find the post you want to feature directly in the X app, and ‘share’ the post to Tagboard.
- Download the app. The first time you use the app, you’ll need to open the app and log in to your Tagboard account. Once you’re logged in, you can feature content directly from the X app.
- Find the post you want to feature, click the ‘Share’ button, and share to Tagboard.
- Select the social board you want to feature the post to and click Feature.
- Click here for the full walkthrough for the Tagboard Go app, including how to set a default social board.
As you can see, combining the power search capabilities built into X, especially their Advanced Search, with the 2-click process of curating content for Tagboard, makes surfacing X posts for your storytelling needs easy.
